21 August 2019: Government will start automatic EORI registration
It was announced overnight that the Government has said it will start to automatically enroll UK firms with European Operator Registration and Identification numbers (EORI).
All VAT-registered firms in the UK - which have not already signed-up to the customs system - will receive an ID number within the next two weeks.
The EORI number will allow UK firms to continue to trade with customers and suppliers in the EU once the UK has left the EU on 31 October 2019. Those without an EORI number will not be allowed to trade with EU member states after Brexit.
So far, 72,000 companies out of the estimated 160,000 VAT-registered EU-only Trading UK organisations, have registered for an EORI number. The Government has said its auto-enrollment scheme will mean 88,000 more firms are to be registered.
