Time at Kuehne + Nagel: 2 Years
Why was the programme right for you?
Kuehne + Nagel is highly regarded within the logistics industry and I was looking to work in a fast paced and progressive environment that would suit my work ethic. I didn’t have a HR background but KN could see how my degree and other work experience would add value to the business and they offered a clear development plan that would ensure I got the training and support I needed to quickly get to grips with the technical elements of HR .
What was your graduate journey?
Kuehne + Nagel is highly regarded within the logistics industry and I was looking to work in a fast paced and progressive environment that would suit my work ethic. I didn’t have a HR background but Kuehne + Nagel could see how my degree and other work experience would add value to the business and they offered a clear development plan that would ensure I got the training and support I needed to quickly get to grips with my first placement was supporting a new business implementation in Birmingham within our retail business.
My graduate mentor took the time to get to know me, my ambitions and my strengths, to make sure that the placement was going to stretch and develop me. It was extremely fast paced and challenging but an amazing start to my graduate journey with Kuehne + Nagel. I then continued into placements within our food services and drinks logistics businesses – each have their own culture, processes and ways of working so it was great the differences but to also support my HR colleagues in sharing best practice across our teams.
Where are you now and what does a typical day involve?
Currently, my role within Kuehne + Nagel is Associate HR Business Partner and I’m working within the Drinks Logistics sector of Contract Logistics based at our regional distribution centre in Coventry.
My typical day involves advising managers on people management processes throughout the whole employee lifecycle from recruitment, talent development to saying goodbye. I also assist employees with their employment queries and facilitate training on site.
I do a lot of proactive work daily across other functions to try and ensure the site runs smoothly and we are all connected in the way we work, this includes liaising with payroll and finance to ensure remuneration packages are right and employee services are financed. I also work with our QSHE team partnering on our health and safety procedures and many other supporting teams to the operation. I always try to have an understanding of the business strategy, short term and long term so I can keep my advice relevant to the needs of my site and the wider company.
What did you enjoy most about your programme?
I really enjoyed the opportunity to network and build relationships across the business, not only with my graduate peer group but also with senior stakeholders. Graduates are recruited across all areas of Kuehne + Nagel and when we come together on our development workshops we learn so much from each other and about what’s going on across the business. We’ve also had lots of interaction with our UK board members and senior management teams through Q&A sessions, project work and business presentations. I’ve been able to build a strong network of contacts across the business that I can call on when needed.
