What attracted you to the Kuehne + Nagel Graduate programme?

I read about the Kuehne + Nagel programmes on the internet and really liked how they offered a structured programme of development through business placements, the graduate workshops and the manager and buddy support system. I also knew that I wanted to work in a large organisation where I could develop a large network of contacts and have the chance to understand the wider business and not just my individual area.

How is Kuehne + Nagel supporting you to reach your career ambitions?

I originally joined Kuehne + Nagel as part of the International Road team. I loved my time in this function learning about how we manage our customer accounts and coordinate our international operations to ensure we deliver on time, on cost and as promised. However, I’ve always been passionate about IT and as my programme progressed I started to get more involved in interrogating data, creating new reports and understanding how the IT systems supported the daily running of the business.

My manager and mentor were great - they took the time to talk through my career development and the options available and we arranged a placement in the IT Solutions team. I could now combine my passion for IT with delivering great solutions with the business - I loved it!

Where are you now and what does a typical week include?

I am now an Application Specialist in the IT Business Intelligence Team in Milton Keynes, UK. During a normal week, I work on crunching numbers, obtaining insights from data and supporting different business units with visualising their KPIs through innovative IT solutions. The role is very exciting as it gives me exposure to many areas within IT, not just locally but also globally.

What do you think are the key skills needed for the programme?

The best skills you can equip yourself for the graduate scheme are open-mindedness, flexibility and analytical skills. The IT function within Kuehne + Nagel is always innovating and introducing new exciting IT solutions, therefore you always need to be open-minded to new things.

Flexibility is also very important – you will be placed on different national or international projects and being flexible is a big advantage. Data is King – this certainly applies within Kuehne + Nagel! I recommend to current students and future graduates to take advantage of the great subscriptions designed for students from the likes of Tableau and Alteryx in order to learn the basics of working with data.
